The Seamstress Tag

Earlier this month (oops, last month now) vlogger Hollie from Hollie sews posted The Seamstress Tag, for sewing vloggers and bloggers to learn a little bit more about each other. I've been enjoying getting to know more about the bloggers I already read, and have been discovering new vlogs that I hadn't come across before.....and now I'm throwing my hat into the ring!

1. Who are you?
I'm Laura and I live in Bedfordshire with my husband. I work in Hertfordshire and grew up in Surrey (so quite a home counties girl). I love Italian food (thanks to my family) and cooking, as well as my new passion for dressmaking. If you look at my Instagram you'll see I also just love beautiful romantic things, so I still enjoy looking at flowers and weddings or wedding dresses even though I'm already married! I work a pretty stressful job during the week and sewing is my R&R.

2. When and why did you start sewing?
I started sewing about 18 months ago. It had always been something I felt like I wanted to do but never got around to it (too busy studying). I love the creative side of designing clothing and was drawn to being able to make clothes with a bespoke fit...like most of us I am not a standard size! I started out with a day course for beginners and have been truly addicted since.

3. What is your favourite or proudest make?
I was very proud of the Macaron dress I made for a family wedding. I spent ages sourcing the right materials, toiling, lining....and it took a lot of work to get it to look right but it was worth it in the end. (I just wish I had more photos of it on the day!)

4. What is your most disastrous make?
Currently in my unfinished projects bag...a hybrid dress made of a mash up of patterns and beautiful fabric (faux silk and georgette) that just hasn't gone well together. I'm leaving it alone for a while until I figure out what to do with it. I was attempting something far far too ambitious.

5. Where is your favourite place to go fabric shopping?
The only place nearby to me is John Lewis, so I spend a lot of time online shopping for fabric instead. I love the range stocked at Sew Over It, and have spent a small fortune there. They have more rayons in stock than most places I look and I find this to be quite a friendly fabric.

6. What is your most used pattern?
Hard one as I keep making different things...I really love the New Look 6261 that I used recently for a lace dress. I've already remade it in different fabric and think it might be a bit of a go to for me know I have the alterations down.

7. Your most dreaded sewing task is...
Cutting out paper patterns, or even worse sticking together pdfs to then cut out.

8. And your favourite sewing task?
I think fabric shopping might be it! I do spend a long time trying to find the perfect pattern and fabric combination. I also really love the first stages of making and cutting out because there's so much potential that is being snipped into and I'm excited to start a long awaited project.

9. What is your favourite 'sewing entertainment'?
I love to prop up my Surface tablet next to my sewing table and get stuck into box sets on Netflix while I'm sewing.

10. Printed or pdf?
I love how indestructible pdfs are (in that you can just print off again if you need to) but I hate putting them together. Printed is so much neater and easier to work with so is definitely my preference (though more expensive annoyingly)

11. What sewing machine do you use?
Janome 7025...basically a 525s in John Lewis form.

12. Do you have any other hobbies?
I love cooking and eating out...as you can tell from my blog! I tried a bit of gardening (unsuccessfully). I like to try to keep fit and go to my local Park Run every Saturday morning. I used to read a lot more but it was too much when I took on my new job, so I save this for holidays mainly.

Over to you now! If you get involved in the Seamstress Tag leave a link in the comments below.
