Deer and Doe Chataigne Shorts in stretch denim

Deer and Doe Chataigne Shorts in stretch denim

Words cannot express how much I love these shorts...this is a perfect pattern!!!
Seriously, perfect fit straight out of the packet. Easy, comfortable....what else could you ask for?

Fabric

I actually made these as an afterthought. I had 2m of slub stretch denim from Empress Mills for £8.90 per metre which I was cutting out for some Ginger Jeans, and had enough left over for another project. After a quick rummage I found there was enough for this pattern. Now, it doesn't say stretch denim, but I can tell you this one definitely works. I did have to add in a zip of a slightly different colour, but I think it works fine (it is mainly invisible after all). The denim itself is medium weight and behaves quite well in the machine; cutting out the jeans and shorts was quite tiring on my hands though! I used the denim for all the facings too, though I think you could probably experiment with something else too.

Pattern and Instructions

I bought the printed pattern in Deer and Doe's black Friday sale with a 20% discount. In the envelope you get two instruction booklets (one French, one English) and the pattern. The pattern isn't printed on tissue; it's on what I would class as regular printer paper (possibly slightly lighter) - it's durable at any rate. I never trace off so cut out and used the pattern pieces directly. I cut a size 38 based on although my measurements actually align more with the 40 - 42 sizes. As I was using stretch denim I figured there would be some 'wiggle room' in there. It is a perfect fit in this combination. I went fir the straight version A with regular waist and cuffs. Version B features a high waist and scalloped hem.

The instruction booklet includes layplans as well as diagrams to accompany the written steps. Steps are in plain language and simple enough to follow for an intermediate sewist. The only tricky part is matching up the waistband, and even that isn't particularly difficult. This was a pretty straightforward sew for me, and they were ready to wear in less than a day - I hand stitched the turn ups so it could have been even less otherwise.

Alterations

Other than cutting the size smaller and using the stretch denim....
I left off the back pocket details - they aren't functional and I wasn't in the mood for anything too fiddly. I accidentally put the zip in at the wrong side too but that wasn't really an 'alteration'!

These fit so well, I've been wearing them all summer. I think the detailing at the front is flattering too and they go with so much.
Highly recommended!
