the #wardrobebuilder project - Trousers

the #wardrobebuilder project - Trousers

Every wardrobe needs a good pair of trousers! For me, they are usually plain so that I can pair them with patterned tops, and often reside in my workwear section. However, this month I'm turning my sights to the casual end of my wardrobe and thinking beyond classic tailored trousers to cropped capris and activewear....they won't fit in anywhere else on the #wardrobebuilder schedule so I'd better take advantage of this month! Will I be able to fit a pair of trousers properly? I have a feeling they will be trickier than the dresses I usually sew!

Trousers I'd love to add to my wardrobe

I've signed up to the Sew Over It Ultimate Guide to Sewing and Fitting Trousers Online Class to assist me with this month's project. Included in the class is the Ultimate Trouser pattern and the Carrie trouser pattern. This gives a lot of mileage in creating smart or casual looks, and means that I can make a pair of capri style trousers too.
I haven't seen many Colette Patterns' Clover trousers on sewing blogs lately, but I think these may be a wise use of my Seamwork credits. These would lean more towards the formal end of the wardrobe - for work or smarter events.
I am already booked on a class to make the B6295 yoga pants at this year's Great British Sewing Bee Live event, so these are definitely going to happen! I hope I finish them in the workshop which focuses on overlocker and coverstitch skills. I wear this style quite regularly so it would be nice to have a handmade pair in the wardrobe!
The Cali Faye Hampshire trousers have a more relaxed fit than some of these other patterns and have some cute features like welt pockets.

There's plenty more trouser making inspiration and styling ideas on the group Pinterest board.

Fabrics I'm loving for this project

Seeing as Sewisfaction are offering 10% off their stretch cottons and stretch denim with the code WBP10

these should really be on the list!
Stretch cottons do help when it comes to fitting trousers and have a little extra give to make wearing that bit easier too.
Suiting and wool fabrics would be perfect for a smart pair of trousers. These fabrics are often more expensive, but I think that you might not need acres to make a smart pair of slim fitting pants.
For my yoga pants I am going to need something a bit different. I'm having a look around for stretchy fabrics suitable for activewear but need a bit of help...if you have a good supplier please leave me a comment!
