Sewing shirts tutorials and workshops

I always have a keen eye out on tips for beginners - I'm only new to dressmaking myself and need a fair amount of help. I know some of you are also just starting out too so here are the most helpful things I've found. If you want a step by step guide with videos to teach you every step you need as a beginner then this month's featured offer could be a good start - the Learn to Sew Your Own Shirt or Shirtdress online class from Tilly and the Buttons. If you use the code WARDROBEBUILDER in February you can get a discount of 15%. This class includes the Rosa shirt pattern and guides you through all the construction details including the fiddly bits like collars and buttonholes.

If you don't feel like taking a class but are still making a shirt, the Rosa seawlong also has quite a few handy tips for making shirts and blouses including how to make adjustments and how to add piping to seams. I particularly like this article on adding piping as it addresses piping at corners. If you really are at a complete beginner stage then I would also highly recommend the Love at First Stitch book from Tilly and the Buttons. I used this to make my first shirt, Mimi. If you want to see how this went and what it's like to sew, then you can see my previous post here.

Rosa extras include a bonus cuff pattern - You can download the extra pattern piece, along with step by step tutorial here.

Another sewalong that has a lot of pictures and step by step instructions is the Sarah shirt sewalong from By Hand London. This includes tips on tackling button plackets and setting in sleeves as well as having lots of great fabric suggestions too.

Last year I bought the Sew Over It Capsule Wardrobe City Break eBook. This also has step by step instructions with photos, along with this video on YouTube tackling the yoke element of the Alex shirt.

Or if you are a little more experienced then this Craftsy class also tackles basic construction as well as ways to maximise efficiency...no pins?!

If you have found any helpful tips for tricky construction elements please leave a link to them in  the comments!
